Hulu ordered a new chapter of Prison Break, moving the franchise forward with a series centered on new characters rather than the original Scofield and Burrows saga. The pickup followed a pilot developed by Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James for 20th Television.
Hulu ordered the series after a 2024 pilot
The streamer granted a full series order following a pilot written by James. The project had been in development since 2023 and formally moved to pilot in December 2024 before securing the pickup this week.
Premise and lead character

The new series is set in the world of Prison Break but follows a different story and cast. The logline centers on Cassidy, an ex-soldier who becomes a corrections officer at one of the deadliest U.S. prisons to prove how far she will go for someone she loves. Emily Browning plays Cassidy.
Prison Break reboot cast
In addition to Browning, the cast includes Drake Rodger as Tommy, Lukas Gage as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas as Michael “Ghost,” JR Bourne as Junior, Georgie Flores as Andrea, and Myles Bullock as Darius “Red.” No returning series regulars from the original were announced as part of this new story.
Creative team and studio
Elgin James serves as showrunner and executive producer, wrote the series, and directs the pilot. Original Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring returns as an executive producer alongside Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz. 20th Television produces.
Where will the Prison Break reboot stream
The series will stream on Hulu in the United States. Disney+ will carry the show internationally. All episodes of the original Prison Break are currently available on Hulu in the U.S.
Does the Prison Break reboot connect to the original?
The order positions the new show as a standalone story that shares the prior show’s universe rather than a direct continuation. The original Fox drama aired from 2005 to 2009 and returned in 2017 for a limited revival. The franchise centered on brothers Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows and featured storylines involving high-stakes escapes and conspiracies tied to government and corporate power.
Key people in the Prison Break reboot
James previously co-created and showran FX’s Mayans M.C., where he oversaw a crime saga with prison-adjacent themes and interlocking criminal networks. Scheuring created the original Prison Break, while Olmstead, Adelstein, and Moritz were part of its long-running producing team. Their return provides continuity while the new cast and premise push the franchise toward a fresh setup.
