I guess not many were expecting this one. The Last Witch Hunter is getting a second life, and it's putting Michale Caine out of retirement at 92. Lionsgate and Vin Diesel’s One Race Films are developing a sequel, with Diesel back as immortal witch hunter Kaulder.
What is confirmed
Lionsgate says the sequel is moving quickly through development. The studio credits a long tail of digital and streaming viewership for reviving the property a decade after release. In a statement, Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said, “The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world.” He added that advances in filmmaking will let the team “deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”
Michael Caine comes out of retirement at 92
Caine is expected to return as Dolan, the priestly keeper of the Witch Hunter’s lore. Trade reports note his deal is not finalized, but he is attached to the project. The casting has a neat echo. In the first film, Dolan postpones retirement to back Kaulder one more time. Caine would now do the same in real life.
What is not set yet
No writer or director has been announced. There is no production start or release date. The studio is positioning this as a fast-track, but creative details are still under wraps.
Why this is happening now
The 2015 film underperformed in theaters and later found a sizable audience on streaming, where it has resurfaced in 2025 charts. The mythology is franchise friendly: a modern fantasy world of secret orders, ancient curses, and a protagonist who literally cannot die. That combination, plus Diesel’s fan base and Caine’s return, gives the sequel a cleaner runway than the first outing had.
