Matt Reeves: Pattinson has read ‘The Batman Part II’ script, Penguin S2 talks are underway, and why Batman skipped ‘The Penguin’

Interviewed by Variety, Matt Reeves shared some interesting insights about The Batman Part II, The Penguin Season 2 and Batman's appearence in the show.

Robert Pattinson is excited about The Batman Part II's script

Reeves said the screenplay for The Batman Part II was delivered to Robert Pattinson, he has read it and is “very excited.” Considering the movie still has a long way to go (it's set to hit theaters on October 1st, 2027), and its history of delays, this is an ecouraging update. Let's hope they stay on track.

The Penguin Season 2 status

Reeves said the team is “in discussions” about a second season of The Penguin and the focus is figuring out how to top Season 1. While the show's protagonist Colin Farrel said 'I know nothing', Reeves reassures that he's key to the project, as well as producer.

Pattinson's Batman in The Penguin

Reeves has been over this a handful of times already. When The Penguin was rolling out in 2024, he said flatly that Pattinson does not appear in the series, not even as Bruce Wayne.

The series was designed as Oswald Cobblepot’s crime story. Putting Batman into Season 1 would have shifted the show’s point of view, turned scenes into stealth Batman teases, and undercut the idea that Gotham’s underworld can carry a narrative on its own.

Batman in The Penguin Season 2

Considering Reeves says the team is in early talks about a second season and the priority is finding a story that tops Season 1, If Season 2 happens, a Pattinson appearance is possible in theory, but it would need to line up with the feature film’s story and schedule. Nothing is promised.

Where Gunn’s Batman fits into all this

As Reeves keeps his Bat-verse self-contained, James Gunn is building a separate Batman for the DCU in The Brave and the Bold, which introduces Damian Wayne as Robin. Casting is not announced. Gunn has said a writer is actively working and he is very involved, with the film not among the furthest-along DCU projects right now. Andy Muschietti has been the filmmaker attached since 2023, while development timing continues to be paced so it does not collide with The Batman Part II. Bottom line for readers: Reeves’ Gotham and Gunn’s DCU Gotham will run in parallel. Do not expect crossover, and do not assume casting rumors are real until Gunn or the studio says so.
