‘The RIP’: first look and what to know about Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s next film

Affleck and Damon are back in a grounded crime story that plays to their strengths. The RIP follows a squad of Miami detectives who stumble on millions in a derelict stash house, then watch trust collapse as word gets out. It basically is the kind of tense, street-level setup Carnahan built his name on.

The premise is simple. A huge seizure of cash pushes a tight police unit past its breaking point. Carnahan’s work usually favors moral pressure cookers, terse dialogue, and concise action. Early teases and first looks point to sun-bleached Miami locations, plainclothes ops, and a focus on procedure rather than spectacle.

Affleck and Damon are back after 'Air'

It is the first Affleck and Damon star pairing since Air, and it gives Artists Equity (their company that focuses on profit sharing for crews and creative partners) another high-profile title with mainstream appeal. For Carnahan, it is a return to the crooked-cops subgenre that put Narc on the map. The timing also places The Rip in the first wave of 2026 releases, which should help it stand out.

Matt Damon's beard

When asked, Damon told GQ:

“[It] was a stage along the way to get to 'The Odyssey.' Once [Christopher Nolan] gave me the part and I met with him, he said, ‘Just keep growing your beard.’ I said, ‘Really, you don’t want to try to hand-lay a beard, like the Italian style?’ and he’s like ‘No, no, no, it’s all got to be real for me, so just keep growing it.”

To which Affleck responded:

I think I am unquestionably the superior beard. So to speak.

Release plan and runtime

Global rollout on Netflix, on January 16, 2026 with a 1 hour 53 minute running time.
