Set in 1962 Derry, Maine, the series explores the origins of Pennywise the Clown prior to the events of Andy Muschietti’s 2017 and 2019 adaptations of Stephen King’s novel.

The show is developed by Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane, who serve as showrunners. Andy Muschietti directs multiple episodes, including the pilot, and executive produces alongside Barbara Muschietti.

Cast

Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise and also serves as an executive producer. The ensemble includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso.

Comic-Con Preview

HBO presented the first ten minutes of the series at San Diego Comic-Con 2025. The footage included a sequence at the Black Spot nightclub, a location that also appears in King’s novel.

Stephen King Easter Egg

The most recent trailer features a brief nod to the wider King universe. At the 57-second mark, a bus labeled “Shawshank State Prison” is visible, referencing the prison from Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
